At All-Star Orthopaedics, a center for orthopedic surgery in Dallas, former professional football player for the Cincinnati Bengals Ickey Woods recently underwent a patient-specific total knee replacement surgery. Dr. Thomas Schott discusses the procedure and Woods' recovery as well as support of the Gridiron Greats program through donations and free procedures to financially struggling, retired National Football League (NFL) players.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) February 29, 2012

Dallas orthopedic surgeons at All-Star Orthopaedics recently performed a patient-specific total knee replacement surgery on former Cincinnati Bengals player Ickey Woods in partnership with the Gridiron Greats program. Dr. Thomas Schott, a member of All-Star Orthopaedics team of Dallas sports medicine surgeons, says Woods suffered from chronic knee pain, a common problem caused by a number of possible conditions including arthritis, gout, or traumatic injury. Because of the wear and tear associated with a high impact sport such as football, Dr. Schott says many retired athletes who played the game for years are prone to joint problems such as chronic knee pain in later life.

While chronic knee pain can often be treated through non-surgical options such as anti-inflammatories, orthotics, medications, or knee arthroscopy, Dr. Schott says patient specific knee replacement surgery may be required for more severe, debilitating cases. The minimally invasive joint replacement procedure requires an incision of only a few millimeters in length in order to recontour the bone in the knee and place the prosthesis, or custom-tailored replica knee. Dr. Schott says a surgical technique such as the patient-specific knee replacement can provide excellent benefits for patients like Woods who have been accustomed to an active lifestyle but wish to return to their normal routine again without pain.

All-Star Orthopaedics is a partner and sponsor of Gridiron Greats, a non-profit organization designed to provide assistance and financial aid to help retired players from the National Football League (NFL) cope with the hardships of life after football. Dr. Schott says through working with Gridiron Greats, All-Star Orthopaedics was able to perform Woods' procedure and assist in surgery cost, accommodations, airfare, and other related expenses. Dr. Schott also says the program offers him and his practice the unique opportunity to give back to the football community and offer effective treatment to patients in severe and debilitating joint pain.

“With Gridiron Greats it's a group of guys who have been very successful. Our motto here at All Star Orthopaedics is ‘let's see if we can help get you off the sideline and back onto the playing field.' And really what we're saying is that we're here to help people.”

Overall, Dr. Schott and All-Star Orthopaedics say Woods' success gives hope to the many NFL players suffering from pain and health-related conditions that result from their years playing the game. Dr. Schott adds that he hopes the future of surgical techniques and treatment will allow more patients, football players or not, the opportunity to live life pain-free. “It's really rewarding, especially a guy like Ickey that's such a nice fellow and that worked so hard afterwards. And to be able to see a guy who can't walk and the very next day he's walking up and down the hall, it's just special.”
