One-day workshop offers IT professionals real-world best practices for building RESTful APIs and exposing heterogeneous back-end assets using the WSO2 platform

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) February 02, 2012

Effective business-to-business communications rely on APIs to connect companies' disparate systems. However, many enterprises struggle to expose RESTful APIs, and ultimately they spend more time and effort creating workaround solutions. WSO2 will provide IT architects and developers insights into identifying and addressing the challenges around building, exposing, and consuming RESTful APIs in a dynamic one-day workshop, “Creating RESTful APIs: Using the WSO2 Platform.” The technical workshop, which runs 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., is being held in two locations:

· Boston, Monday, February 21, 2012, to register visit wso2.com/events/workshops/2012-february-boston-creating-restful-apis-workshop.

· New York, Thursday, February 23, 2012, to register visit wso2.com/events/workshops/2012-february-new-york-creating-restful-apis-workshop.

Creating RESTful APIs

The workshop is designed for IT architects and developers seeking to build effective RESTful APIs used across different business domains. It will explore how to expose heterogeneous back-end assets (i.e. services, data, processes and rules) as RESTful APIs in a quick, simple, easy, and architecturally sound manner. The session also will examine how WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB), WSO2 Application Server, WSO2 Data Services Server, and two forthcoming WSO2 offerings for API management and API storefront, provide solutions for creating, publishing, securing, managing, discovering, evaluating, and consuming RESTful services. Workshop session topics will include:

· API Architecture, a look at how to meet business requirements by designing an elegant, consumable RESTful API using basic REST methods. The approach will follow REST methods, principles, and best practices to build the API. It will address how to enhance the API using RESTful techniques—such as Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State (HATEOS) and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) types—and describe API design best practices.

· Writing REST Services, examining how to publish RESTful APIs exposed with a REST binding by using the Java REST API, JAX-RS, and how WSO2 Application Server can be used to host JAX-RS.

· Mediating Legacy Services and Securing the RESTful API Using the API Gateway Pattern and WSO2 ESB, exploring how to configure the WSO2 ESB to follow the gateway pattern and expose back-end data, service, and process resources as RESTful APIs. The topic will cover how to secure an API using API management and security protocols such as HTTP basic authentication or Open Authorization (OAuth).

· Providing RESTful Data Access, demonstrating how WSO2 Data Services Server enables architects to expose data entities as resources and perform create, read, update and delete (CRUD) operations using REST methods, while conforming to HATEOS.

· Beyond the APIs: API Store and Your Business as an API, a discussion of how enterprise API patterns can encourage API consumption and reuse. An API storefront process pattern enables potential consumers to discover APIs, match business requirements, subscribe to APIs, and gain access credentials. The “Your Business as an API” pattern delivers cloud-based API hosting infrastructure, which augments the API by enabling multi-tenancy, self-service configuration, billing and metering, and control. Overall, this pattern covers how vertical platform-as-a-service (PaaS) takes business APIs into the enterprise and out to partners, suppliers, and customers.

Workshop Presenters

The workshop will be led by Hiranya Jayathilaka, WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus product lead. Hiranya is an expert in HTTP and spearheads the work on supporting REST APIs within WSO2 ESB and the WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform. He is a long-time committer on the Apache Synapse and Apache Xerces2/J projects; author of the FIX transport for Apache Synapse; and a contributor to several other open source projects, including Apache Derby and Apache Web Services. Hiranya is also a pioneering member of the MOINC project, which is focused at leveraging grid computing and volunteer computing principles to implement highly scalable Web services clusters.

In New York, Hiranya will be joined by Chris Haddad, WSO2 vice president of technology evangelism. Chris works closely with developers, architects, and C-level executives to increase WSO2 technology adoption, improve the middleware platform, and maximize customer value. Prior to joining WSO2, Chris led research teams at Burton Group and Gartner advising Fortune 500 enterprise organizations and technology infrastructure vendors on adoption strategies, architecture, product selection, governance, and organizational alignment. His team advanced best practices in PaaS, cloud application architecture patterns, SOA, and application middleware. Chris also has served as an Apache Axis committer.
