Battelle Energy Alliance Selects Unisys to Provide Google Apps for Government Email and Collaboration Solution for Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory

Following recent success at U.S. General Services Administration, Unisys chosen to transition 5,000 personnel to cloud-based email and collaboration platform

PR Newswire

BLUE BELL, Pa., Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation UIS announced today that it has been awarded a contract to transition 5,000 users at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to Google Apps for Government, a cloud-based email and collaboration solution.

The move to the cloud-based platform is designed to allow INL employees to share information technology infrastructure, resources and applications while helping them to collaborate internally and externally. The solution is expected to provide secure access to email and data at reduced operational costs, allowing INL personnel to perform vital work more efficiently with improved system uptime and availability.

The contract was awarded to Unisys by the Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC, the Department of Energy's management and operations contractor at the Idaho National Laboratory. The INL is one of the ten multi-program national laboratories responsible for operations within the Department of Energy (DOE).

"Information management and information technology are important enablers of INL's mission to promote national energy security," said Brent Stacey, chief information officer, INL. "Use of cloud computing, through solutions like Google messaging technologies with Unisys managed services support, is one way for us to innovate traditional services for higher reliability with a lower cost. Leveraging cloud-based technology also allows information managers to focus the necessary attention and resources toward the most critical elements of INL's mission."

The contract has a potential value to Unisys of more than $10 million over 10 years, with a 37-month base period of operation valued at approximately $5 million followed by seven one-year option periods exercisable at the discretion of BEA on behalf of the Idaho National Laboratory. In addition to Google, subcontractors Tempus Nova and CRI Advantage will team with Unisys on the project.

"At a time of constrained budgets, forward-looking federal agencies are embracing cloud-based messaging solutions as a way to reduce costs and better serve citizens," said Anthony C. Hess, Ph.D., managing partner, civilian agencies: healthcare and natural resources group, Unisys Federal Systems. "Unisys' support and dedication to DOE-INL's cloud transition, combined with Battelle Energy Alliance's innovative leadership, will allow the laboratory to focus on its core missions of addressing the nation's energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions."

Over the course of the implementation phase, Unisys will transition 5,000 personnel to Google Apps for Government. Once the implementation phase is complete, Unisys will continue to provide operations and maintenance of the cloud-based environment.

Unisys has more than fifteen years of experience supporting the Department of Energy. The company has provided IT and engineering services support on numerous projects ranging from the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Oregon to the Energy Information Administration's Forrestal Computer Facility in Washington, D.C.

The award closely follows Unisys' recent transition of 17,000 employees of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to the Google Apps for Government. The project made GSA the first federal government agency to migrate all of its employees to a cloud-based email environment.
