"Sustainability and Innovation for a Cleaner Environment" Symposium Announced by the ACS Division of Business Development and Management for the Fall 2011 ACS National Meeting

As part of the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), the Business Development & Management (BMGT) Division of the American Chemical Society is hosting a symposium on “Sustainability and Innovation for a Cleaner Environment” at the Fall 2011 National Meeting & Exposition at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado on August 30th.

The Theme of the International Year of Chemistry is "Chemistry–our life, our future," and focuses on the "achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind." In describing the IYC, Koïchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO, quotes, “Raising public awareness about chemistry is all the more important in view of the challenges of sustainable development. It is certain that chemistry will play a major role in developing alternative energy sources and in feeding the world's growing population.”

The "Sustainability and Innovation for a Cleaner Environment" symposium will focus on new technology innovation models with which scientists will help society journey towards a more sustainable future - with chemistry as an integral part of the solution to some of the world's most challenging problems.

Twelve speakers, representing both business and academia, will share how they are setting new goals in the area of sustainability with the intent of benefiting environment, economy and society; with a special focus in key areas of environment (air and water), energy, materials and health. Examples of some new business models using Open Innovation as means to achieve such goals.

The Division would like to thank BASF for their sponsorship of this symposium, and the values it represents.

The ACS Division of Business Development & Management, BMGT, provides resources for chemists to combine technical abilities and knowledge with business & management competencies and personal interests to forge successful careers. For more details, visit the BMGT website at (formerly
