Extends Leadership Role in Enabling Green Networks

IRVINE, Calif., March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation BRCM, a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced it has joined the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) -- a global non-profit consortium dedicated to reducing energy consumption of networking and computing equipment. Today's announcement extends the company's leadership role in enabling green networks. Broadcom offers the industry's broadest portfolio of Ethernet Efficient Ethernet (EEE) devices that significantly reduce energy costs(1).

It is estimated that over 150 million metric tons of CO2 are used to power IT equipment (10 percent of overall electricity demand) with a global price tag of approximately $16 billion per year(2). The problem may worsen as more and more systems, from business servers and network printers to home IPTV set-top boxes, are left powered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Broadcom's award-winning proprietary AutoGrEEEn™ technology, allows system designers to quickly implement the recently ratified IEEE 802.3az™ IEEE standard, reducing power consumption in the physical layer of the network by 70 percent or more. This could help reduce CO2 emissions in the U.S. alone by up to 2.85 million metric tons(3).

Highlights/Key Facts:

  • The potential of reducing CO2 emissions by 2.85 million metric tons translates to the following equivalencies according to www.epa.gov:
    • Annual greenhouse gas emissions from 495 thousand passenger vehicles
    • CO2 emissions from 291 million gallons of gasoline
    • The electricity use of 314 thousand homes for one year
    • Carbon sequestered by 66 million tree seedlings grown for ten years
    • Carbon sequestered annually by 551 thousand acres of pine or fir forests
  • Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a global consortium dedicated to reducing the energy consumption of the IT sector through three focus areas: increasing the energy efficiency of computing equipment, increasing the adoption and deployment of power management, and shifting user behavior to smart computing practices.
  • The goal of CSCI is to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting targets for energy-efficient computers and components, and promoting the adoption of energy-efficient computers and power management tools globally.
  • The initiative is led by Cisco, Dell, Emerson Network Power, F5, Google Inc. Intel, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, and the World Wildlife Fund. Sponsors include 1E, Broadcom Corporation, Acer Inc., CompTIA, Faronics, Finisar Corp, Fujitsu Limited, Hitachi Ltd., NEC Corporation, Sony Electronics, Sparxent Verismic Software, and Verdiem Corporation.
  • Broadcom offers the industry's broadest portfolio of EEE solutions and has integrated the standard in devices throughout its portfolio. Broadcom's Energy Efficient Networking (EEN) technology places circuits into sleep mode during the idle time between packet transmissions.
    • Integrates dynamic and very efficient power management controllers capable of managing and shutting down unused system-on-a-chip (SoC) functions in real-time.
    • Once the system knows that a link in the communications layer has gone to sleep, additional sub-systems can be powered down.
  • Broadcom's broad portfolio of EEE enabled devices provide customers with end-to-end silicon and software solutions that enable faster deployment of energy efficient networks. Visit http://go.broadcom.com/2eE for a comprehensive list of Broadcom's EEE-compliant products.

Quotes:

George Goodman, Executive Director, Climate Savers Computing Initiative

"Having the benefit of Broadcom's deep networking silicon experience in our networking workgroup will help to fill out the technological portfolio and makes a great addition to CSCI. Broadcom has demonstrated their commitment to achieve energy efficiency beyond industry standards and this passion for going the extra mile is having a positive impact in reducing worldwide CO2 emissions."

Nicholas Ilyadis, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, Infrastructure and Networking Group, Broadcom Corporation

"CSCI has already made significant strides in reducing the world's power consumption through their  dedication to promoting the implementation of  smart technology. Through our collaboration with CSCI and other industry leaders we hope to have an even greater impact in reducing energy costs and decreasing the carbon footprint of today's networks."

Potential savings based on the following factors:

  • Full deployment of EEE on a population of links equal to those in use today
  • Assuming all 10/100 links become 1G
  • Some migration of data center links to 10G
