Broadcom Joins Climate Savers Computing Initiative

IRVINE, Calif., March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation BRCM, a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced it has joined the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) -- a global non-profit consortium dedicated to reducing energy consumption of networking and computing equipment. Today's announcement extends the company's leadership role in enabling green networks. Broadcom offers the industry's broadest portfolio of Ethernet Efficient Ethernet (EEE) devices that significantly reduce energy costs(1).

It is estimated that over 150 million metric tons of CO2 are used to power IT equipment (10 percent of overall electricity demand) with a global price tag of approximately $16 billion per year(2). The problem may worsen as more and more systems, from business servers and network printers to home IPTV set-top boxes, are left powered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Broadcom's award-winning proprietary AutoGrEEEn™ technology, allows system designers to quickly implement the recently ratified IEEE 802.3az™ IEEE standard, reducing power consumption in the physical layer of the network by 70 percent or more. This could help reduce CO2 emissions in the U.S. alone by up to 2.85 million metric tons(3).
