CORONA DEL MAR, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

CureDuchenne, an advocacy and research group for parents and children navigating a diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), today announced a new partnership with the Duchenne Therapy Network (DTN) that will provide educational seminars and guidance to parents looking for world-class treatment options.

DTN was created to help parents and physicians of those who have been diagnosed with DMD find a professional physical therapist skilled in the treatment of this most common form of muscular dystrophy that affects more than 1 in 3,500 boys worldwide. By partnering with DTN, CureDuchenne is able to offer parents a gateway to the country’s most skilled physical therapists, a key element in any DMD treatment plan.

Parents throughout the region are recognizing the importance of finding a physical therapist with specific DMD Training. Debra Miller, founder of Orange County based CureDuchenne, sees DTN owner and physical therapist Jennifer Wallace as the area’s “first responder” for families facing a DMD diagnosis. “We feel so confident in referring families with a DMD diagnosis to Jennifer because we know that they will immediately receive the care and information they need to have the best possible outcome for their son,” Miller said.

Boys with DMD are usually diagnosed by the age of five, in a wheelchair by age 12, and may be completely paralyzed by their late teens. Historically, most patients with DMD do not live to see adulthood. Duchenne can occur in any family, from any race and from any background.

Wallace has specialized in Duchenne physical therapy for the last 8 years. DTN offers an opportunity to physical therapists around the country who work with DMD boys, to increase their knowledge and skills to provide the best treatment possible for these boys.

“I was so pleased to find a physical therapist who specializes in DMD and can educate us on all aspects of care for our son,” said Mindy Cameron, the mother of an 8 year old boy with DMD. “Finding our son a therapist who could immediately recommend real-life, right-now changes and exercises we could get started with made all the difference. Not only physically for him, but emotionally for us.”

As a kick-off to their partnership, CureDuchenne and DTN will be offering a new seminar series called, “The Physical Care of Duchenne.” The series will be held at the Ayres Hotel in Costa Mesa May 8. Registration is available to the public and can be found at www.duchennetherapynetwork.com.
