Elsevier Launches Essay Competition for Young Chemists

Competition Celebrates UN-designated International Year of Chemistry

Elsevier, the leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced an essay competition for young chemists to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). The subject of the essay of no more than 1000 words is “How can chemistry contribute to solving the challenge of developing sustainable resources (water, energy, food) in the 21st century?”

The essays will be evaluated by a panel of Elsevier judges. Three winners will be selected among all eligible entries. The first place winner will receive an Apple iPad, second place will receive a Kindle, and third place will receive a $150 Elsevier books gift certificate. All entries must be e-mailed as a Word or PDF attachment to iyc2011(dot)essay(at)elsevier(dot)com by 11:59 p.m. ET on June 30, 2011. No purchase is necessary to enter or win. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students who have reached the age of majority in their state of residence, who are no older than 27, and who are enrolled in an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. The 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to mankind, under the theme “Chemistry - our life, our future”. Elsevier was the co-sponsor of the opening ceremonies for the IYC in Paris at the UNESCO Headquarters in late January, 2011.
