H&A Architects & Engineers introduces the Building Sciences Studio. This dedicated core group is providing new services to clients that delve into the physics behind the engineering.

With the application of advanced analytical tools, the Building Sciences Studio has the ability to gain a deeper understanding of how a building will perform.

Combined with H&A's depth of experience with energy audits and early system optimization, the Building Sciences Studio is working to help clients meet federal energy mandates in creative and low-cost ways.

The Building Sciences Studio's core capabilities and services include:

  •     Advanced Energy Simulations
  •     Daylighting Simulation
  •     Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling
  •     Advanced Electrical Analysis
  •     Envelope Optimization and Condensation Studies
  •     Continuous Innovation

H&A's goal is to produce better performing buildings from every aspect including cost effectiveness, constructability, reliability and sustainability.

“The Building Sciences Studio creates an environment that offers simulations beyond the traditional approach of just determining savings toward the end of the project,” says Mechanical Department Head, Rob McAtee, PE, LEED AP. “At H&A, simulation begins at the conceptual design stage, continues through final design phases, and throughout the LEED certification process.”

H&A's Building Sciences Manager, Stephen Smith, PE, LEED AP, is leading the firm's effort. His M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, with an emphasis on CFD modeling, is a primary influence on his experience in building simulation applications. Smith also has extensive experience with engineering design of the built environment.

H&A is in the unique position to draw upon the combined design experience of the entire company, so recommendations that cross disciplines are not overlooked.

“As part of the Building Sciences Studio's core capabilities we also have the ability to include advanced electrical analysis,” says Electrical Department Head, Boushra Hanna, PE. “These services include daylight harvesting, electrical load flow analysis, protective coordination studies, fault current analysis, and arch flash calculations.”

As an adopter of the Architecture 2030 Challenge, H&A seeks to provide clients with the best-performing and highest-quality buildings possible for little to no additional cost.

“We have assembled qualified and experienced building professionals, and have invested heavily in the training and software necessary to produce robust results for our clients,” Smith says. “At H&A we are on the front lines of this aggressive design approach, designing facilities to use significantly less energy to meet today's building code standards.”
