Mobile Knowledge Workers the Fastest Growing Segment of the Office Workforce

According to a new report from InfoTrends, mobile knowledge workers currently account for more than 60% of the total workforce in Brazil, Germany, India and Japan and more than 70% of the total workforce in the United States. Forecast projections show these regions are expected to show continued growth and penetration through the 2014 period.

According to a new report from InfoTrends, mobile knowledge workers currently account for more than 60% of the total workforce in Brazil, Germany, India and Japan and more than 70% of the total workforce in the United States. Forecast projections show these regions are expected to show continued growth and penetration through the 2014 period.

InfoTrends recently completed an in-depth study entitled “Mobile Knowledge Workers: Emerging Opportunities.” The study addresses several key elements related to opportunities and strategies in targeting mobile knowledge workers, including forecasting mobile knowledge worker growth rates. The study aims to understand the differences by key regions, company size segments, and industries by examining a mix of developed and emerging markets. For this study InfoTrends studied the United States, Germany, Japan, India and Brazil. The results provide information technology vendors and infrastructure service providers with insights to support their strategic planning, product development, and go-to-market activities related to mobile knowledge workers.

“Mobile knowledge workers are arguably the fastest-growing segment of today's office workforce,” commented Jon Reardon project leader and group director at InfoTrends. “For the most part, the adoption and penetration of mobile devices has been driven by consumers, as consumers become familiar with their personal mobile devices, they are quickly finding new ways to use them in their own business-related activities. This ‘consumerization of IT' is one of the key factors helping to push mobile technology into the corporate sector, which is fueling increased numbers of mobile knowledge workers.”

India has the largest population of mobile knowledge workers, which is not surprising given the sheer size of its total workforce. India's mobile knowledge worker population totaled 296.5 million in 2009, representing approximately 63% of its total workforce. The United States has a mobile worker population of 100.3 million, which reflects an advanced rate of mobile technology adoption and a high overall penetration of mobile workers.

Brazil's total penetration of mobile workers is the lowest among all five countries due to slower adoption rates of mobile technologies and mobile working practices. Like other Latin American countries, Brazil represents a strong growth opportunity and InfoTrends expects its mobile worker population to grow substantially over the next five years along with improvements to the mobile/network infrastructure.

Germany and Japan come in at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of mobile workforce population, partly due to the overall size of these countries. Like many Western European countries, Germany is rapidly adopting mobile technologies from a consumer perspective. At the same time, however, the impact on business procedures has been slower than in most developed regions. Interestingly, Japan can be viewed as a laggard in terms of mobile working business practices for a variety of reasons. Japan is a leader in the adoption and usage of consumer mobile technology—even driving development of new platforms and devices. Even so, Japan's highly structured business culture has fostered limited adoption of mobile technologies for enterprise or corporate environments. This may change along with government initiatives to promote telecommuting and other mobile working practices.

Reardon continued, “Also behind this shift to mobility in the office are numerous factors that can be grouped into two key areas: technical advancements and productivity. On the technical side, improvements in mobile technologies and device platforms, combined with advancements in operating systems and the mobile network infrastructure, have fueled a whole new wave of business users. Meanwhile, businesses of all sizes are looking to leverage these technical advancements to reduce costs and improve productivity.”
