OPSWAT Issues Market Share Report for Antivirus and Backup Client Usage

OPSWAT's latest market share report announces top antivirus vendors worldwide and in North America during the fourth quarter. The report also shows trends in Windows OS usage and backup client market share and usage.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 21, 2010

OPSWAT released a new installment of their quarterly Antivirus Market Share reports today, adding for the first time usage data for Backup Client software. The report announces leading Antivirus vendors and products in North America and worldwide, Windows OS usage in North America and worldwide, and Backup Client usage and market share worldwide.

OPSWAT, the industry leader in software management SDKs, interoperability certification and multiple-engine scanning solutions, analyzed almost ninety thousand opt-in reports from endpoints employing the OESIS Framework. Data was collected and compiled from applications detected by the OESIS Framework, as well as from common applications by searching the OS registry on endpoints.

Among the highlights of the report was the announcement of AVAST, ESET and Symantec as the top three antivirus vendors worldwide. AVAST maintained their top position from OPSWAT's previous Antivirus report, and ESET and Symantec increased their ranking from September. These three vendors are also the top three in North America, with Symantec leading followed by AVAST and ESET.

“We are continuing to see free antivirus solutions, such as Microsoft's, grow in popularity. 58% of users in this report had a free solution, up from 42% in our June report,” said Benny Czarny, CEO of OPSWAT. Microsoft Security Essentials is the top Antivirus product in North America, and is also second worldwide behind AVAST! Free Antivirus.

OPSWAT reported that Windows 7 usage is increasing in North America and worldwide, while both Windows XP and Windows Vista have declined in usage since the last report.

The top three worldwide backup client vendors, as detected in this report, are Norton, McAfee and Dropbox. Jeff Garon, Director of Marketing at OPSWAT, commented, “Companies with security suites that include a backup client are leading the backup market, the exception being Dropbox, which holds the third largest share as a standalone backup client vendor.” In a sample to determine usage for applications detected by OPSWAT, almost half of users had backed up data within the last day, and almost 75% had backed up in the last week.
