On January 19, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission reported that Western Union had professed to "aiding and abetting wire fraud" by permitting illegal money transfers to benefit human traffickers, money laundering schemes, and otherwise enable the transfer of "dirty money." Western Union also admitted that it was aware that its agents were covering up money laundering transactions in order to avoid detection. Western Union has agreed to pay a $586 million settlement.
