Preparing for the Future of Work by Aligning Business and Education

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) September 29, 2016

Apollo Education Group, ManpowerGroup and STEMconnector will host industry thought leaders at The National Press Club today in Washington, D.C. to define recommended priorities that drive scale and speed for upskilling America's workforce in order to fill millions of jobs. The event will spotlight multiple industries having varied perspectives on upskilling by sharing innovative, yet practical solutions to mitigate the most complex business challenges that empower companies with short-term results and long-term sustainability.

According to ManpowerGroup's latest Talent Shortage Survey, 38 percent of employers globally report difficulties filling jobs. Meeting their skills needs will require a fundamental rethink of talent management and specifically how learning happens. People are working longer, and millennials especially are preparing to run "career ultramarathons," so learnability – the desire and capability to develop in-demand skills to be employable for the long-term – is critical.

Earlier this year, ManpowerGroup and Apollo Education Group announced a partnership that offers eligible Manpower associates the opportunity to achieve college degrees at no personal cost. Part of Manpower's MyPath program, employees can gain in-demand qualifications while they work and while they're supported by ManpowerGroup's expert career coaches.

"At ManpowerGroup, we believe businesses have an important role to play in the communities in which they operate – and upskilling people is part of that," said Jonas Prising, Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup. "Working with more than 400,000 businesses and placing over 3.4 million people into work each year, we know which skills employers want and where. We're looking forward to sharing practical solutions to help individuals gain new skills while businesses succeed, ensuring the U.S. can compete globally with a workforce prepared for the jobs of today, tomorrow and the future."

Companies spend billions of dollars building talent pipeline programs. Now, employers realize they must develop innovative approaches to upskilling and reskilling, refreshing and retooling their workforce to be competitive and to create a human capital advantage.

"Addressing the skills gaps that exist across so many industries is one of the critical challenges facing this country," said Greg Cappelli, CEO of Apollo Education Group. "It's more important than ever that adults and working learners have access to innovative educational resources that will give them the skills today they will need to lead the workforce of tomorrow."

"Business leaders have set the tone by ramping up investments and engagement in order to prepare the next generation of skilled talent necessary to drive innovation and economic growth," said Edie Fraser, CEO of STEMconnector. "Now we need to shift our focus of turning investments in education into a sustainable, long-term talent pool."

The event will feature a highly interactive, action-oriented discussion with a strong emphasis on the role for employers in upskilling the 21st-century workforce and innovative approaches that will change our future. Speakers include the most celebrated thought leaders in conversation with Jonas Prising, Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup; Greg Cappelli, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Apollo Education Group; Dale Jones, CEO of Diversified Search; and Rebecca Haley, VP of Human Resources at Genesis Healthcare. The panel will be moderated by Mark Hamrick, Washington Bureau Chief & Senior Economic Analyst at Bankrate.

Thought provoking topics will include:

  • The employer/employee relationship is at a tipping point
  • Talent pipelines in fast-changing times
  • Growing inequality
  • Focus on STEM
  • Upskilling, reskilling and retooling a diverse and global workforce
  • Less conversation, more action

Upskilling America's Workforce will take place on September 29, 2016 from 10:30-11:30pm Eastern at The National Press Club Studio in Washington, D.C.

The event will be broadcast via live stream and available for remote viewing. Register via http://apollopd.com/stemconnector-manpower-online1/
