COVID-19 Pandemic Validates Importance of Recent Data Exchange Mandates

NextGen Healthcare, Inc. NXGN, a leading provider of ambulatory-focused technology solutions, today announced it is intensifying its efforts to support healthcare clients in navigating the new rules from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced in March. The new rules implement key interoperability provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act (CURES) and support the U.S. Administration's broader efforts to improve health data transparency and access. Additionally, ONC recently announced significant additional funding for private data projects to advance development and use of interoperable health IT. This announcement reinforces public health experts' call for greater coordination between state and federal government agencies to track the progression and intensity of COVID-19 as it continues to spread across the U.S.

Through the expansion of its NextGen® Share interoperability services platform and API partner marketplace, NextGen Healthcare will address the increased demand for moving and sharing patient data from Electronic Health Records (EHR) easily, quickly and securely. Interoperability improves patient experience and care coordination, enhances patient safety, and reduces costs. NextGen Healthcare is also expanding resources such as educational webinars, blogs and videos on interoperability to help educate and support healthcare providers. One example is the company's recent blog post, "What you Need to Know About the new Health Data Interoperability Regulations." Additional resources can be found in the NextGen Resource Library.

"As the healthcare industry navigates the COVID-19 pandemic, the secure exchange of critical medical information has never been more important," said Rusty Frantz, President and Chief Executive Officer of NextGen Healthcare. "We are dedicated to our mission of empowering the transformation of ambulatory care and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our clients to provide the solutions they'll need to achieve frictionless interoperability with providers, practices, hospitals and other facilities."

About CURES

The new regulations will require significant compliance efforts for healthcare providers, information networks, exchanges, and health information technology (HIT) companies. However, CURES also creates opportunities for improving care delivery and outcomes through increased data exchange between providers, and easier patient access to their own health information. Key to unlocking these benefits is the introduction of new Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards. ONC's goal is for certified HIT companies to adopt FHIR-based Application Programming Interface (API) standards. Meanwhile, CMS is requiring hospitals to provide electronic admission, discharge and transfer notification to other healthcare facilities, providers and designated care team members.
