Program Raises Awareness and Funds to Help in the Fight Against Skin Cancer

Henry Schein Medical, the U.S. medical business of Henry Schein Inc., announced today its national sponsorship of "Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™", a participant-driven fundraising event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the American Academy of Dermatology's SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign. Starting as a one-adventure hike in 2014, the AAD's signature event has grown to include several hikes throughout the country and continues to build momentum. By supporting the "Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™" program, Henry Schein Medical, together with the AAD, furthers its commitment to reducing the incidence and mortality rates of skin cancer. The AAD's SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign works to create a world without skin cancer through public awareness, community outreach programs and services, and advocacy efforts that promote the prevention, detection and care of skin cancer.

"The team at Henry Schein strongly believes in giving back to the community, and we are so thrilled to join the AAD in support of Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™," said Brad Connett, President, U.S. Medical Group, Henry Schein. "Together we can ‘help health happen' and provide support for people affected by skin cancer, including melanoma."

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting one in five Americans. Lives can be saved by educating the public and providing free access to skin cancer prevention and detection programs. Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™ participants are encouraged to take the first steps to end skin cancer by registering for the upcoming events in:

  • Elk Grove Village, IL – Saturday, September 28, 2019
  • Tempe, AZ – Sunday, October 6, 2019
  • Beverly Hills, CA – Saturday, November 9, 2019

"We greatly appreciate the support of Henry Schein in our efforts to help the public prevent skin cancer and detect it early, when it's most treatable," said board-certified dermatologist George J. Hruza, MD, MPH, FAAD, president of the AAD. "Although the vast majority of skin cancers are preventable, the numbers in the U.S. keep on growing. By working together to raise awareness through ‘Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™,' we want to remind families that skin cancer is preventable with a few simple steps like seeking shade, covering up, and applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher."

Thanks to the program's dedicated donors and hikers, the AAD's "Skin Cancer, Take a Hike!™" initiative has helped provide nearly 370,000 free skin cancer screenings and built nearly 120 shade structures that protect as many as 1.8 million people daily.

Founded in 1938, the AAD is the largest and most influential of all dermatology groups in the U.S. With a membership of more than 20,000 physicians worldwide, it represents almost all practicing dermatologists in the U.S., as well as a growing number of international dermatologists.
