GALVESTON, Texas, April 29, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American National recently celebrated Earth Day by participating in the Houston Audubon Society's "Lights Out" campaign to protect migratory birds.

After an unfortunate incident that took place in May 2017, when a group of migratory birds disoriented by a late spring storm and bright city lights flew into the American National building, American National pledged to take action to ensure this misfortune would not occur again.  The company has since worked with the Houston Audubon Society to identify actions to help the building become less attractive to migrating flocks.

With Earth Day approaching, American National is fulfilling its promise to the community by participating in the annual "Lights Out" movement from April 19 until May 7 by turning off the lights within the building overnight. The company also previously hosted a "Lights Out" workshop, organized by the Houston Audubon and other community leaders. The presentation introduced Upper Texas Coast migration and left local business leaders with a deeper understanding of bird collisions, as well as detailed actions that can prevent these types of deaths. Since that meeting, an alert system to track incoming storms and the activities that might pose a threat to migrating birds has been put in place by Houston  Audubon.

"American National has a strong history of doing what's right," said company President and CEO Jim Pozzi. "In this instance, it was clear that this partnership was the right action to take, and we are happy to do it."
