Best Buy Canada School Tech Grant program awards more than $200,000 to secondary schools across Canada

Thirteen schools to receive grants for new computers and digital devices to inspire, motivate and empower students through new tech skills

• From more than 275 applicants, 13 secondary schools across Canada have been awarded cash grants of up to $10,000 each
• Recipients will use grants to enhance or integrate technology used in various courses, programs or extracurricular activities

BURNABY, BC, Feb. 5, 2019 /CNW/ - Best Buy Canada is proud to announce the 13 secondary schools, selected from more than 275 applicants, to receive a combined $208,000 in funding for tech-based curriculums through the Best Buy School Tech Grant program. From British Columbia to Newfoundland, the recipient schools will use these grants to give their students access to the latest in computer and digital technology to help keep them motivated and focused as they move towards post-secondary education.

"Year after year we are overwhelmed with the quality of applications we receive," said Karen Arsenault, Best Buy Canada's Community Investment Manager. "As school curriculums advance, so does the need for upgraded or increased technology in the classroom. Each of our recipient schools clearly illustrated creative teaching methods and ways to incorporate technology into their classrooms to inspire the next generation of innovators."

The 13 schools receiving a Best Buy School Tech Grant are:

General Grants:

• Bayview Academy – St. George's, NL
• Carihi Secondary School – Campbell River, BC
• Frederick Banting Alternate Site – Stittsville, ON
• Immaculata – Ottawa, ON
• Mistawasis Nehiyawak High School – Leask, SK
• St John's High School – Winnipeg, MB

STEM Grants

• Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain – Saint-Jean, NB
• École secondaire Évangéline – Montréal, QC
• Esquimalt High School – Victoria, BC
• Sheldon Williams Collegiate – Regina, SK
• St. Paul Regional High School – St. Paul, AB
• Stratford Central Secondary School – Stratford, ON
• Westwood Community High School – Fort McMurray, AB

General Tech Grants are designed to help improve or integrate technology in classrooms to advance student learning. This could include new technologies including libraries, special needs classrooms, literacy programs and more. STEM Tech Grants are for schools looking to enhance technology in programs pertaining to science, technology, engineering, and math, which includes robotics clubs, math programs, computer coding and digital media courses.

All thirteen schools will receive their funding in the coming weeks and celebrations will happen at the School Tech Grant recipient schools with the support of local Best Buy teams.

Best Buy Canada focuses its community investment on supporting youth to connect with technology to inspire, motivate and empower their education. Through this mission, Best Buy has provided more than 200 Canadian schools with grants to purchase new technology, in addition to offering post-secondary scholarships and supporting youth with hands on tech learning opportunities.
