JOHNS CREEK, Ga., Oct. 31, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Saia, Inc. SAIA announced that Saia LTL Freight has been named a 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award recipient by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The award was presented at the 2018 American Trucking Associations Annual Management Conference & Exhibition in Austin, Texas. Saia was one of 40 carriers to receive the distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay's 3700 partners.

"We are tremendously honored to have our efforts recognized with this award," said Saia Executive Vice President of Operations Paul Peck. "Saia continues to support the many 'green' programs and collaborations we have initiated over the years, including our partnership with SmartWay."

SmartWay is a voluntary program that supports companies' initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions created by the transportation industry. The SmartWay Partnership is a domestic and international freight and supply chain program that manages data for partners, like Saia, across all domestic shipping modes in the U.S. and Canada. SmartWay implements its goals to lower freight carbon footprints by conducting analysis and research of freight impacts, engaging with freight experts, anticipating and responding to trends, developing strategic resources and communication strategies, and serving as an international model.

"Today, the EPA is honoring top-performing SmartWay Carrier Partners with this year's 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award, for their leadership in moving more goods with less fuel," said EPA Assistant Administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation Bill Wehrum. "These companies inspire others in the freight sector to invest in innovative technologies and business practices that save fuel, while reducing costs and protecting the environment."
