Akebia Therapeutics Announces Presentations at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2018 Annual Meeting

Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. The presentations include final results from two Phase 2 studies of vadadustat in Japanese patients with anemia associated with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD) and dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease (DD-CKD), and results from a systematic literature review of the use of assessment tools to measure quality of life in patients with anemia due to CKD.

Vadadustat, a hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI), is an investigational drug that relies on the HIF pathway – the same pathway used by the body to adapt to lower oxygen availability, such as that experienced with a moderate increase in altitude. At higher altitudes, the body responds to lower oxygen levels by increasing the availability of HIF, which coordinates the interdependent processes of iron utilization and erythropoietin production to increase red blood cell production and, ultimately, improve oxygen delivery.
