Spectrum Brands Employees Pitch in at Community Parks and Nature Areas in Eight States

Company joins Clean Lakes Alliance, NEEF for annual employee volunteer day

PR Newswire

MIDDLETON, Wis., June 14, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, more than 300 employees of Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. SPB, the parent company of market-leading brands such as Rayovac®, Remington®, Kwikset®, Cutter®, Nature's Miracle®, George Foreman® and Armor All®, take to their local communities in Blacksburg, Va.; Danbury, Conn.; Dayton, Ohio; Denison, Texas; Lake Forest, Calif.; Miami Lakes, Fla.; Middleton, Wisc. and St. Louis, Mo. for a company day of service focused on ensuring community parks and nature areas thrive as places for everyone to enjoy.

The theme for this third, annual company-wide event—Community with Purpose—builds on Spectrum Brands' work in south-central Wisconsin to promote awareness about how individual actions on local lands, from litter cleanup to planting trees to removing invasive plants, can help protect the quality of nearby bodies of water, the communities around them and the wildlife that call them home.

"With eight Spectrum Brands locations spread throughout the country engaged in this day of service, we are poised to have a national impact on local parks and nature areas and their connected waterways," said Spectrum Brands Division Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer Daniel Hutter. "By helping employees make the connection between their individual actions and the long-term impact they can have on the natural areas around them, the day gives our employees a chance to be part of ongoing, lasting change."

The company's dedication to improving the environment near its facilities is rooted in its partnership with the Clean Lakes Alliance, a Madison, Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that works to improve the water quality of the lakes, streams and wetlands of the Yahara watershed. As a Sustaining Founder of Clean Lakes Alliance, Spectrum Brands has been working to protect water quality and steward the local environment in the Madison area for the last seven years.

"Spectrum Brands is a long-time partner of Clean Lakes Alliance, but its involvement goes well beyond financial support," said Clean Lakes Alliance Executive Director James Tye. "Hundreds of employees volunteer their time toward projects that help make our lakes cleaner and clearer for our community."

To ensure employees take important environmental education lessons from the day that help expand this effort from a day-long activity, Spectrum Brands partners with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF). A leader in lifelong environmental education, NEEF helps Spectrum Brands sites connect with local parks and nature organizations for their volunteer service events and provides a series of family-friendly activity guides focused on environmental stewardship for Spectrum Brands employees.

"Companies like Spectrum Brands have a valuable role to play in environmental education through employee engagement," said Meri-Margaret Deoudes, president and CEO of NEEF, noting that many companies are finding educating employees about their impact on the environment while engaging them in projects focused on protecting the environment is also good for the bottom line. "NEEF commends Spectrum Brands for embracing environmental stewardship in their communities and extending the lesson beyond one day of service by empowering employees to take action to protect and enjoy natural areas where they live."

Each location's event will have a different focus and project, based on local needs. Clean Lakes Alliance, which has hosted Spectrum Brands volunteer events in the greater Madison, Wisconsin, area for the past five years, will again host the company headquarters day of service, with a focus on removing invasive plants from Pheasant Branch Creek, Marshall Park and Stricker's Pond. Blacksburg (Va.) employees will be mulching trails and removing invasive plants at Nellies Cave Park. Employees in Danbury (Conn.) will be planting and doing trail work at Tarrywile Park and Mansion. The Dayton (Ohio) team will be tending to the equestrian trail at Five Rivers MetroParks' Possum Creek MetroPark. Denison Lake (Texas) employees will be working at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The Lake Forest (Calif.) team will be maintaining trails and picking up trash with Laguna Canyon Foundation. Employees in Miami Lakes (Fla.) will clean wooded areas at Amelia Earhart Park. In St. Louis, employees will volunteer at Gateway Greening's Urban Farm where they will be weeding, planting, harvesting vegetables and tending to crops.

Spectrum Brands operates with a commitment to the environment, sustainability and corporate responsibility and plans to involve employees throughout the year in environmental education and community engagement.
