Ingevity Pledges $300,000 Sponsorship to South Carolina Aquarium's "In Our Hands" Campaign

CHARLESTON, S.C. (PRWEB) January 31, 2018

The South Carolina Aquarium leads the way in connecting people with water, wildlife and wild places. At the heart of this mission is a commitment to the health of our oceans and local waterways-a sentiment shared by Charleston-based chemical manufacturing company, Ingevity. Today, the Aquarium is thrilled to announce a $300,000 gift from Ingevity to sponsor an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing use of single-use plastics and highlighting innovative alternatives in people's everyday lives.

"You don't have to look any farther than patients in our Sea Turtle Care Center to realize the devastating impact plastic pollution has on our oceans and streams," said Kevin Mills, South Carolina Aquarium President and CEO. "We're grateful to Ingevity for responding to the call and helping us to educate the public about responsible consumption."

The gift from Ingevity will foster more awareness of plastic pollution by funding the creation of the new "Respond Gallery" within the South Carolina Aquarium. Additionally, the gift will provide care for animals affected by plastic pollution by financially supporting the rehabilitation of a sea turtle from rescue through its release.

"Ingevity's sustainability efforts extend beyond our facilities into the communities where we operate," said Michael Wilson, Ingevity President and CEO. "Our goal is to purify, protect and enhance the world around us. The "Respond Gallery" ties into Ingevity's goals by highlighting ways we can all make an impact and protect the environment. We're enthusiastic about the development of this interactive space and the awareness it will bring to the community."

As guests complete their journey from rescue to rehabilitation to release in the Aquarium's working sea turtle care center, Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery, they will end in the new "Respond Gallery," where interactive digital elements, original art, and a collection of plastics removed from sea turtles will inform guests about the harmful effects of single-use plastics on the environment. The Aquarium aims to inform new audiences who may be unaware that these alternatives exist.

Ingevity has also committed to taking a more active role in reducing the amount of litter in the Charleston area and to encouraging the community to take part in keeping the environment litter-free. Late last week, employees from the South Carolina Aquarium and Ingevity joined forces to celebrate the new partnership by participating in a trash and debris clean up at the Folly Boat Landing. More than 300 pieces of debris were collected and logged in the Litter-Free Digital Journal project within the South Carolina Aquarium Citizen Science mobile application.
