  • Automated cloud solution generates reservoir rock permeability results directly from digital scans
  • Efficient reservoir characterization aligns with industry drive for operational excellence in a price-constrained oil market

BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 02, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Exa® Corporation, a global innovator of simulation software, announced today that its DigitalROCK™ solution, the first predictive computational solver for relative permeability, is now available on the cloud at DigitalROCK.com. Deemed the "holy grail" of the industry's quest for digital rock technology, multiphase simulation offered by Exa's DigitalROCK solution provides essential flow-related rock properties in a fraction of the time possible with physical lab tests.

Critical oil and gas reservoir engineering decisions, such as well placement, stimulation techniques, enhanced oil recovery strategies, and reserves estimation, require accurate data on how reservoir fluids interact with the surrounding rock. The DigitalROCK solution, which leverages the ExaCLOUD® platform, provides consistent porosity, absolute permeability and multi-phase relative permeability measures directly from a micro-CT scan of a rock sample.  Exa's multiphase fluids simulation solution was developed with BP during a three-year technology collaboration program.

"The results of a systematic five-stage study shows that the multi-phase fluid simulator quantitatively reproduces the distribution of fluids seen in experiments along with the resulting relative permeability curves and residual oil or gas," said Gary Jerauld, reservoir engineering technology advisor at BP. "This is another example of BP bringing leading digital solutions to the industry through collaboration with strategic partners."

Robert Krumm, Area Technical Manager at Premier Oilfield Laboratories, remarked, "Exa's cloud-based DigitalROCK solution provides a fast, convenient way to upload rock images, run analyses, and generate results for important rock properties needed to support key field planning and engineering decisions. DigitalROCK expands accessibility of super-performance computing and Lattice-Boltzmann flow simulation to anyone interested in digital core analysis."

Stephen Remondi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Exa, said, "We are excited to bring 25 years of algorithms and software innovation in fluid flow physics to the oil and gas market. As producers focus on operational excellence, Exa's DigitalROCK solution will enable them to increase cost efficiency and improve reservoir performance."
