Monday's Market Minute: Previewing The Week

Another packed calendar lies ahead in terms of closely-watched economic data with potential to move markets. While the week begins with a whisper - a couple Fed speakers, a 3 and 6-month bill auction, and the Treasury Budget coming out Monday - things will heat up rapidly the rest of the week.

Inflation data will be released Tuesday: the Consumer Price Index will provide insight into some of the recent inflation trends that have emerged throughout the pandemic. Wednesday, we will hear about Industrial Production and information from 12 regional Fed districts when the Beige Book data comes out. Thursday, we have housing data to keep an eye on, as well as retail sales and weekly jobless claims. Last but not least, Friday’s data includes Consumer Sentiment. In addition to scheduled releases, this week we have some central bank activity. The ECB and the BOC will announce interest rate decisions, and both are expected to leave rates unchanged as a continuation of the “wait and see” trend we’ve seen from policymakers.

Earnings season kicks off too – most of the focus will be on the banks, but we also have some big names to watch. Their individual results could impact the indices; for example, ten times NFLX moves the /NQ. Whether you’re talking ecodata to provide insight into how the U.S. economy is handling the pandemic, Fed speakers and the insight they’ll provide ahead of the July 29 FOMC meeting, comments from the ECB and the BOC, or the some of the individual companies reporting quarterly results, it all has potential to move markets and shift investor sentiment.
