Netflix, Inc. NFLX released its highly anticipated Q1 earnings after the market closed Monday, and as always, subscriber growth was the main focus.
While the numbers were a bit lower than expected (4.95 million added subscribers), the stock is up about 1 percent after hours.
In Q4, Netflix posted its biggest ever quarterly subscriber growth numbers, adding 7.05 million subscribers in the quarter. The news sent shares rocketing up 9 percent after hours.
Netflix Total Subscribers By Quarter:
- Q1 of 2014 – 46.14 million.
- Q2'14 — 48 million.
- Q3'14 — 50.66 million
- Q4'14 — 54.78 million
- Q1'15 — 59.62 million
- Q2'15 — 62.71 million
- Q3'15 — 66.02 million
- Q4'15 — 70.84 million
- Q1'16 — 77.7 million
- Q2'16 — 79.89 million
- Q3'16 — 83.28 million
- Q4'16 — 89.1 million

Netflix has steadily increased its subscriber base in the past 13 earnings releases with the largest gain coming in Q4 2016. With international subscribers continuing to ramp up, high expectations from Q1 subscriber numbers failed to deliver amongst considerable competition and a lull in compelling original content.
