Auto Sales Roundup: Cold January Is No Competitor To Sales Figures

Global light-vehicle sales numbers are due out Tuesday, with Ford Motor Company F, General Motors Company GM and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV FCAU numbers already in.

Despite the frigid January felt nationwide, auto sales numbers coming in have been overwhelmingly positive.

Ford's Numbers: Solid, Despite Total Vehicles Down

Ford's sales conference call was scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. EST. The media release indicated that, compared to the overall industry, the average transaction prices rate grew almost threefold, with U.S. sales coming in at 173,723.

Other highlights from the call include:

  • SUVs: best start since 2004; 50,212 vehicles sold for a 3 percent increase year over year; sales of the Edge up 26 percent
  • Transit: sales up 51 percent at 9,631 vehicles; van sales best January since 1985
  • Lincoln: sales up 8 percent; strong demand for Lincoln MKX
  • F-Series: sales down 5 percent at 51,540 vehicles; transaction prices grew $2,500, while incentive spending down $500 (compared to 2015)
  • Year Over Year: sales of 173,723 come in 3 percent lower

According to Ford Vice President of U.S. Marketing, Sales And Service Mark LaNeve, "For Ford, overall transaction prices were up $1,800 in January […] driven largely by strong customer demand, especially for our SUVs and F-Series pickups."

General Motors: Anticipated 9% Retail Sales Increase

General Motors is expected to have its Q4 2015 earnings call Wednesday at 10 a.m. EST. In the meantime, the company released estimated earnings earlier on Tuesday.

According to circulated estimated releases, General Motors will report flat to slightly positive sales numbers, with a 9 percent retail sales increase on the month.

SeekingAlpha said, "General Motors unit sales growth stayed in positive territory with a 0.5 percent gain to 203,745 units. The mark was higher than Kelley Blue Book's estimate and just a tad short of Edmunds' forecast."

Anticipated numbers include:

  • Chevrolet: sales down 3.6 percent; 137,893 vehicles; Silverado-CK up 5 percent at almost 38,000
  • GMC: sales up 3.5 percent to 36,933 vehicles
  • Buick: sales up 45.5 percent to 18,269 vehicles
  • Cadillac: sales down 8 percent at 10,740 vehicles
  • Average Transaction Price: up $1,150 year over year; $37,000

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles: Sales Up 7%, Best January Since 2007

Per a press release on Tuesday, Fiat Chrysler sales numbers came in at 155,037 vehicles, a 7 percent increase year-over-year.

Highlights from the release include:

  • Dodge Caravan: 83 percent increase in sales
  • Year-Over-Year: 70th-consecuritve month of YoY gains
  • Jeep: sales up 15 percent; best January on record
  • Jeep Cherokee, Patriot, Compass: best January on record
  • Dodge: sales up 19 percent
  • Dodge Challenger, Charger, Journey: best January on record
  • Ram Pickup Trucks: best January on record

According to Fiat Chrysler Head of U.S. Sales Reid Bigland, "Overall, FCA US achieved its best January sales in nine years and our 70th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases."

General Motors was trading down 3.09 percent at $29.18.

Ford was trading down 3.36 percent at $11.66.
