The Purchase, New York-based company reported quarterly net income of $977 million, or $0.86 per share, compared to $1.02 billion, or $0.87 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding special items, the company's earnings came in at$0.91 per share. Its revenue surged to $2.53 billion from $2.49 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.88 per share on revenue of $2.54 billion.

Eurozone
European shares were lower today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 fell 0.39 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index fell 0.78 percent, while Italy's FTSE MIB Index dipped 2.04 percent. Meanwhile, the German DAX slipped 0.58 percent, and the French CAC 40 dropped 0.68 percent, while U.K. shares fell 0.85 percent.
Economics
Initial jobless claims rose by 1,000 to 260,000 in the week ended October 24. Economists were expecting claims to total 263,000 in the week. US gross domestic product increased at an annual pace of 1.5 percent in the third quarter, versus economists' expectations for a 1.6 percent growth. Pending home sales slipped 2.3 percent in September, according to the National Association of Realtors. Supplies of natural gas climbed 63 billion cubic feet for the week ended October 23, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said. However, analysts were expecting a gain of 66 billion cubic feet to 70 billion cubic feet.
