OnePlus Co-Founder Takes Aim at iPhone's Throne: Unveils Nothing Phone (2) Launch Timeline and Battery Details

Carl Pei, the co-founder of OnePlus, plans to challenge the dominance of Apple Inc.’s AAPL iPhone as he unveiled the launch timeline and battery details of the highly anticipated Nothing Phone (2)

What Happened: The second generation of the Nothing Phone will be launched globally in July this year, announced Pei during an interview with Forbes.

The OnePlus co-founder stated that the U.S. market has plenty of potential for an Apple alternative to thrive, citing the encouraging results of Phone (1), which witnessed a high percentage of iPhone users switching to the Nothing brand.

“Apple is continuously gaining ground over Android, and there isn’t a real exciting alternative out there right now, especially for the younger generation,” he stated.

Nothing Phone (2) is expected to feature a transparent design language like its predecessor along with significant upgrades such as a larger 4,700 mAh battery and powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, promising an 80% overall performance boost compared to the previous generation device, the report noted.

When asked why the smartphone isn’t featuring Gen 2 chipset, Pei responded, “The latest technology comes at a cost which isn’t always justified from a user benefit standpoint. Choosing Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 ensures that Phone (2) remains accessible while delivering a significantly improved experience compared to Phone (1).”

Why It’s Important: Pei is the CEO and founder of Nothing, a U.K.-based consumer tech startup. The company launched Nothing Phone (1), a mid-range device with a design, price range and specifications similar to Apple’s iPhone SE, in July last year

According to the report, the first-generation Nothing Phone had a strong beginning, with sales reaching approximately 750,000 units, estimated to be around half the quantity of first-generation iPhone sold.
