Wen Tesla Roadster? Elon Musk Has An Update For You

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk on Thursday said that its Roadster will reach production by the end of next year.

What Happened: Musk reiterated that the design and engineering of the Roadster would be completed this year and it would reach production by the end of next year. Musk was responding to a question posed to him on the Twitter Spaces hosted by Ford Motor Co F CEO Jim Farley.

Musk thanked those who have been awaiting their Roadster vehicles for their patience and said, “We are certainly testing the patience of our reservation holders.”

However, the Roadster is not expected to move Tesla’s financials in a big way. “Financially, it’s sort of a small potato situation. It’s not going to move the needle in a major way financially. It’s not even the icing on the cake but the cherry on the icing on the cake,” Musk said.

To Farley’s query on Musk’s cherry-colored first-generation roadster sent to space in 2018 as a dummy payload for a Falcon Heavy mission, Musk said that it does not appear to hit anything for the next 10 million years. The vehicle can also be tracked on whereisroadster.com, Musk said.

“In theory, it will be there even after the pyramids have eroded,” Musk said.

Why It Matters: At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting earlier this month, Musk said that the Roadster will hopefully start production next year. Roadster, touted to be the ‘quickest car in the world’, was unveiled as a concept in November 2017. It was initially expected to commence production in 2021.
