Elon Musk Promises To Fix 'Silly' Online Fees For Tesla Orders

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that he will “fix” the online processing fee on Tesla orders.

What Happened: Musk noted that online processing fees are “silly” and that he would fix it. The CEO was responding to a Twitter user who posted the price breakdown for a Model Y order.

@elonmusk⁩ ordered another Tesla. Do we really need an online processing fee of $11.85 in 2023??” the user tweeted. As per the Twitter bio, the user is already a Model X user and is now adding a Model Y to the garage.

The total cost of the vehicle including customizations and an online processing fee of $11.85 was $50,293.85.

“No, that's silly. Will fix it,” Musk replied.

Why It Matters: The $11.85 is a charge from the government or in particular the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and not from Tesla, other Twitter users noted. The government agency is a New Jersey equivalent of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

While a few users mourned the amount, others found it “reasonable” given that zero-emission vehicles sold in New Jersey are exempt from state sales and use tax.

Other users also raised questions on order fees, registration amount, and tire fees in the breakdown.

“I’m thrown by the Tire fee…Is there an option where you can buy the car without the tires ?” a user wrote.
