Trading volume on OTC Markets demonstrated a strong start to 2021, with crypto and cannabis-related companies dominating the top trading activity.

During January, trading volume was high, with nearly $72 billion worth of shares trading on the OTCQX, OTCQB, and Pink Markets, a 38% increase from December.

Looking at the OTCQX Market, the top tier of the OTC Markets, there was a notable presence of companies in emerging industries. Unlike most months—where large multinationals like Adidas ADDYY, and Danone DANOY typically dominate— eight of the top ten highest performing securities during the month were from either one of these two sectors.

Cannabis Takeover

Last year, cannabis experienced a remarkable uptick as many states deemed the industry essential during the pandemic. January’s numbers show a continued, if not increased, interest in the sector as 60% of the top ten securities on the OTCQX were cannabis companies.

Among this list of securities were Curaleaf Holdings Inc CURLF, Trulieve Cannabis Corp TCNNF, Green Thumb Industries Inc GTBIF, and TPCO Holding Corp GRAMF. TPCO experienced a notable 224% dollar volume increase from the previous month, most likely due to its merger with Subversive Capital Acquisition Corp. that was completed in mid-January.

AYR Strategies Inc AYRWF was yet another high-performing cannabis security last month with a notable dollar volume increase of 225% from December.

Crypto On The Frontlines

Crypto led the OTCQX Market in January by not only taking the top slot, but the top two slots. The top traded security on the list was the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust GBTC followed by the Grayscale Ethereum Trust ETHE.

The GBTC was the most actively traded security on the market with a total dollar volume of $14 billion for the month.

Cryptocurrency mining company Hut 8 Mining Corp HUTMF was among the top 15 most actively traded securities in January with a significant dollar volume increase of 352% month-over-month.

OTCQB

On the OTCQB Venture Market, American Battery Metals Corp ABML was the most actively traded security. The company experienced a significant dollar volume change for the month, which may be indicative of the growing interest in green energy initiatives. At the end of January, the company received a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office to address a number of energy concerns including a shift towards a clean energy economy.

Fannie Mae FNMA, Freddie Mac FMCC, CytoDyn Inc CYDY, and BTCS Inc. BTCS were all among the most traded securities on the OTCQB market.

Below are the top 10 most actively traded securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB markets in January.
