Tesla Inc TSLA vehicles are some of the smartest on the road. The cars have some of the most advanced driver-assist features, and can use the built-in cameras to identify people, stop signs, other vehicles and other objects in the real world.
Now, Tesla hacker @greentheonly has dug into the code and discovered that Tesla's vehicles will soon start identifying each other, and displaying the other Teslas on screen, rather than depicting a generic car or SUV image. This will be done either via the car's camera system, or possibly some type of vehicle to vehicle communication.
Looking into the code, it also appears emergency vehicles will be recognized eventually, but the images were not present quite yet.
Benzinga's Take: When people start finding these things in public vehcile's code, it usually means the updates are right around the corner. Tesla is always making their cars better with software updates, just like a mobile phone.
While showing other Teslas may not add to functionality, having the car able to identify emergency vehicles definitely feels like a step in the right direction for true full self driving, which is Tesla's ultimate goal.
