Walmart Inc WMT and Shopify Inc SHOP have announced a partnership to launch a channel allowing Shopify merchants to sell products on Walmart.com.
What Happened: Shopify merchants across the U.S. will be able to apply to sell through Walmart.com. If approved, they will then be able to connect their Shopify store to their Walmart Seller Account, allowing them to sync their product catalog and create product listings on Walmart.com.
Why It's Important: It's estimated more than 120 million Americans visit Walmart.com every month. This is the first time Walmart has partnered with a commerce platform allowing small to medium-sized businesses to sell through its online marketplace.
“By partnering with Walmart, we will be able to connect merchants with consumers across America within a trusted marketplace, helping merchants drive new sales while consumers discover new products they’ll love,” said Satish Kanwar, vice president of product at Shopify in a statement.
What's Next: By the end of this year, the company estimates 1,200 Shopify merchants are expected to be able to sell through the Walmart marketplace.
Shopify's stock was trading up 5.5% at $783.97 per share at the time of publication on Monday. The stock has a 52-week range between $844 and $281.69.
