Mid-Morning Market Update: Markets Open Higher; Humana Earnings Beat Expectations


Following the market opening Wednesday, the Dow traded up 0.71 percent to 25,816.11 while the NASDAQ climbed 1.45 percent to 7,483.24. The S&P also rose, gaining 1 percent to 2,783.08.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

On Wednesday, the health care shares climbed 2 percent. Meanwhile, top gainers in the sector included Genomic Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: GHDX) up 24 percent, and PDL BioPharma Inc (NASDAQ: PDLI) up 19 percent.

In trading on Wednesday, consumer staples shares fell 0.3 percent.

Top Headline

Humana Inc (NYSE: HUM) reported upbeat earnings for its third quarter.

Humana reported earnings of $4.58 per share, beating estimates of $4.26. Total revenue came in at $14.21 billion, which exceeded estimates of $13.98 billion.

Humana raised its FY18 adjusted earnings guidance from $14.15 per share to $14.40 per share.

Equities Trading UP

Victory Capital Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: VCTR) shares shot up 19 percent to $9.71 after the company reported upbeat Q3 results.

Shares of Jones Energy, Inc. (NYSE: JONE) got a boost, shooting up 26 percent to $2.99. Jones Energy reported appointment of two new independent directors.

Genomic Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: GHDX) shares were also up, gaining 23 percent to $86.95 after the company reported upbeat Q3 earnings.

Equities Trading DOWN

MiMedx Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDXG) shares dropped 36 percent to $4.00 after Nasdaq decided to suspend trading in the stock effective 11/8.

Shares of Infinera Corporation (NASDAQ: INFN) were down 33 percent to $4.16 after the company reported downbeat Q3 sales and issued weak Q4 forecast.

Diplomat Pharmacy, Inc. (NYSE: DPLO) was down, falling around 28 percent to $14.695 following Q3 results.


In commodity news, oil traded up 0.84 percent to $62.73 while gold traded up 0.38 percent to $1,230.90.

Silver traded up 0.93 percent Wednesday to $14.635, while copper rose 0.9 to $2.757.



European shares were higher today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 climbed 1 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index rose 1.77 percent, while Italy’s FTSE MIB Index rose 1.21 percent. Meanwhile the German DAX climbed 0.85 percent, and the French CAC 40 jumped 1.24 percent while U.K. shares rose 1.24 percent.


The Federal Open Market Committee will begin its two-day policy meeting today

The Energy Information Administration’s weekly report on petroleum inventories in the U.S. is schedule for release at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Data on consumer credit for September will be released at 3:00 p.m. ET.
