New Data Show Gamers Spend Almost Half Console Time Not Playing Games

Microsoft Corporation MSFT has unveiled its newest video game console ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo Wednesday in Los Angeles.

'The World's Most Powerful Console'

Dubbed “the world’s most powerful console,, the Xbox One X is the latest release from Microsoft, and the company’s first entrance into 4K gaming.

The Xbox One X is the “smallest Xbox ever,” yet it packs a punch, with 40 percent more power than any other console, according to Microsoft. The new console is set to go on sale on Nov. 7, with an expected $500 price tag.

Xbox One X graphics will be unprecedented, containing 6 teraflops of graphical power, surpassing its biggest competitor, Sony Corp (ADR) SNE PS4 Pro, has just 4.2 teraflops of graphical power.

But are video games the future of console gaming?

Beyond Games

According to Nielsen data, U.S. gamers on average spending roughly half of their console time doing anything but playing actual games. With all the new features that consoles contain — including YouTube, Netflix, Inc. NFLX, and others — there is much more to do with these home entertainment systems than just gaming.

While compatible with all Xbox One games and accessories, it is likely that the latest model will appeal to hardcore gamers in the meantime.
