Facebook Hopes To Combat 'Revenge Porn' With New Tools For Messenger, Instagram

Facebook Inc FB announced a potential solution to one of the fastest growing problems plaguing social media platforms: the distribution of intimate images without permission.

Facebook's Head of Global Safety Antigone Davis explained in a blog post the unauthorized distribution of intimate images, also dubbed as "revenge porn," can be defeated through the use of various tools.

One study has shown that up to 93 percent of all "revenge porn" victims suffer some form of emotional distress, while 82 percent report significant impairment in at least one area of their life.

Users are encouraged to report images they believe me be shared without the person's permission through a "report" link. Facebook's specialty trained representatives will review the image and, if necessary, disable the account of the user who shared the photo. Then, photo-matching technologies will be used to help thwart further attempts to share the imagine on not only Facebook's core social media platform but on Messenger and Instagram as well.

"These tools, developed in partnership with safety experts, are one example of the potential technology has to help keep people safe," the blog post noted. "Facebook is in a unique position to prevent harm, one of our five areas of focus as we help build a global community."
