Moonlight In La La Land: What Happened With The Best Picture Winner?

Well, that was awkward.

During the 89th Oscars on Sunday, the Academy Awards for Best picture was awarded to "La La Land," the 2016 American musical romantic comedy-drama film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Celebration erupted and the "La La Land" crew went up to the stage to accept yet another award. The celebration lasted around two minutes when things turned awkward as a member of the Academy Awards crew walked on stage and tried to discretely communicate with a few members of the "La La Land" team.

The film's producer Jordan Horowitz then said into the microphone, "there is a mistake" and announced "Moonlight" is the real winner.

"This is not a joke, 'Moonlight' won best picture," Horowitz said while holding up the sheet of paper presenters read in announcing the winner.

What The Heck Happened?

At first, many assumed it was a joke or a reference to the 2015 Miss Universe pageant when the host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner. But what happened was the presenters were given the wrong category card, which read "Emma Stone."

The Oscar screw-up prompted the accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers to explain the error since the firm tallies the Oscar votes.

"The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected," the accounting firm said in a statement. "We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."
