The Dow rose 0.75 percent to 18,729.94, while the NASDAQ composite index declined 1.16 percent to 5,190.17. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.02 percent to 2,162.76.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Foreign Utilities: This industry slipped 5.5 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was CPFL Energia S.A. (ADR) (NYSE: CPL), which fell 5.7 percent. CPFL Energia shares have climbed 81.97 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.92 percent in the same period.
  • Regional - Midwest Banks: This industry declined 5.2 percent by 11:00 am with First Community Financial Partners Inc (NASDAQ: FCFP) moving down 2.5 percent. First Community Financial shares have surged 47.50 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.92 percent in the same period.
  • Catalog & Mail Order Houses: This industry fell 4.3 percent by 11:00 am ET. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) shares dropped 4.7 percent in today's trading. Amazon.com shares have jumped 17.01 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has increased 3.92 percent in the same period.
  • Cigarettes: The industry dropped 4.1 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was British American Tobacco PLC (ADR) (NYSE: BTI), which declined 5 percent.
