BlackBerry To Partner With Indonesian PT BB Merah Putih; Will End Internal Hardware Development

BlackBerry Ltd BBRY announced that it struck a licensing deal with telecom joint venture in Indonesia, PT BB Merah Putih, to not only manufacture and distribute but also promote its devices that run Android software and apps. This is meant to cater to the Indonesian market.

The Canadian firm believes this alliance could accelerate its overall focus on driving software growth, particularly developing and licensing device software offerings. This includes security solutions and applications, from its Mobility Solutions.

As a result, John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, said, "The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital."

The smartphone maker also revealed a strategic alliance with Emtek Group to accelerate, as well as, advance BBM's consumer business at the international markets by establishing fresh cross platform applications, content and services on the BBM platform.

Aside from this, the company named Steve Capelli as its new chief financial officer. Capelli previously held the position of Sybase President of Worldwide Field Operations. Prior to that, he was the CFO of Siemens Pyramid.

At time of publication, BlackBerry was up 2.92 percent in Wednesday's pre-market session, seen at $8.11.
