The Dow fell 0.29 percent to 18,339.14, while the NASDAQ composite index declined 0.32 percent to 5,322.62. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 0.25 percent to 2,171.79.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Publishing - Books: This industry slipped 3.3 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was Scholastic Corp SCHL, which fell 3.1 percent. On Thursday, Scholastic reported a Q1 loss from continuing operations of $1.15 per share on revenue of $282.7 million.
  • Foreign Money Center Banks: This industry declined 1.5 percent by 11:00 am with Banco Santander, S.A. (ADR) SAN moving down 3.6 percent. Banco Santander shares have dropped 13.45 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 12.30 percent in the same period.
  • Auto Parts Wholesale: This industry fell 1.4 percent by 11:00 am ET. Magna International Inc. (USA) MGA shares dropped 1 percent in today's trading. Magna shares have dropped 9.14 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has increased 12.30 percent in the same period.
  • Appliances: The industry dropped 1.2 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Whirlpool Corporation WHR, which declined 1.2 percent.
