The Dow rose 0.61 percent to 18,406.05, while the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.59 percent to 5,326.35. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.51 percent to 2,174.22.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Toy & Hobby Stores: This industry slipped 0.5 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc BBW, which fell 0.5 percent. Build-A-Bear shares have dropped 46.80 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has increased 11.34 percent in the same period.
  • Publishing - Books: This industry declined 0.5 percent by 11:00 am with Pearson PLC (ADR) PSO moving down 0.7 percent. Exane BNP Paribas downgraded Pearson from Outperform to Neutral.
  • Diversified Investments: This industry fell 0.45 percent by 11:00 am ET. Mesa Royalty Trust MTR shares dropped 0.5 percent in today's trading. Mesa Royalty Trust shares have dropped 23.10 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has increased 11.34 percent in the same period.
  • Packaging & Containers: The industry dropped 0.3 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Fuwei Films (Holdings) Co., Ltd FFHL, which declined 10 percent.
