The Dow rose 0.40 percent to 18,602.97, while the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.54 percent to 5,272.70. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.44 percent to 2,192.32.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Processed & Packaged Goods: This industry slipped 1.1 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was J M Smucker Co SJM, which fell 8.4 percent. Smucker reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, but revenue fell short of estimates. The company maintained its adjusted EPS forecast for the full year.
  • Foreign Utilities: This industry declined 0.9 percent by 11:00 am with CPFL Energia S.A. (ADR) CPL moving down 1.1 percent. CPFL Energia’s PEG ratio is 3.42.
  • Meat Products: This industry fell 0.4 percent by 11:00 am ET. Hormel Foods Corp HRL shares dropped 1.1 percent in today's trading. Hormel Foods shares have surged 33.19 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 15.29 percent in the same period.
  • Advertising Agencies: The industry dropped 0.2 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was VisionChina Media Inc (ADR) VISN, which declined 5.4 percent.
