Migration In Europe: People Not Satisfied With The EU's Actions

Migration levels in the European Union have hit unprecedented levels in recent years, leading to what many have called a crisis. According to the Pew Research Center, more than 1.3 million people applied for asylum in the EU, Norway and Switzerland last year.

Data from the same institution showed that more than two thirds of people in Germany, France, the U.K., Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Greece and Spain were not satisfied with the way the EU handled the situation with migrants.

Another poll, the Eurobarometer, commissioned by the European Parliament, found that 74 percent of Europeans “want the EU to do more to manage the situation,” and that two thirds of polled individuals said the Union’s action on migration was not enough.

The survey was conducted among 27,969 people from all of the EU member countries.

Moving Forward?

In the article linked above, the European Parliament went into the measures it is taking to tackle the migration crisis.

Back in March, the member countries “adopted a report on the situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic EU approach to migration.”

In May, the European Commission’s proposal to create a standard travel document for migrants going into the EU was approved.

In July, member countries voter to create “an EU border control system that will bring together the EU’s border agency Frontex and national border management authorities.”

Looking ahead, the European Commission is pushing for the creation of a common list of safe countries of origin to help more easily handle applications from people coming from these countries.
