said it is expanding its engineering base in Canada and would increase engineering jobs to total of 1,000 in the Canada's auto-making province of Ontario. Reuters said Ontario hailed the announcement as a sign of confidence in Canadian automaking. The report noted that GM, which is investing heavily in connected and driverless cars, would use the Kapuskasing facility to testing new GM products and technologies. Reuters report said Ontario Economic Development Minister Brad Duguid and GM's Canadian president Stephen Carlisle have been promoting Ontario, the first Canadian province to allow on-road testing of autonomous vehicles, as a high-tech hub for connected-car development. Reuters highlighted that "Ontario assembly plants produced nearly 15 percent of North American vehicles over the last five years and the auto industry contributes around $16 billion annually to the province's GDP." At the time of writing, shares of GM were down 0.51 percent to $29.21.
