Las Vegas Is The Most Searched Destination, Expedia Says

Las Vegas is the most popular destination searched on Expedia Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE), while Mexico is the preferred international destination for American travelers.

"Whether a standalone search for flights, hotel, car rentals, or a money-saving package, travelers the world over are drawn to Sin City," Expedia said in a press release.

Expedia revealed top destinations as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, saying over the last two decades, has averaged a booking on its site every other second.

Below are some interesting facts revealed by Expedia in its celebratory press release:

  • "Over the last ten years, the Top 10 list of hotels sold includes:
      1. Las Vegas
      2. Orlando
      3. New York
      4. Los Angeles
      5. San Diego
      6. San Francisco
      7. Miami
      8. Chicago
      9. Cancun
      10. Orange County"
  • "Over the past 20 years, more people have flown out of New York City than from any other American city, based on flight bookings on"
  • "Over the past 20 years, the most popular domestic flight route is between LAX and JFK."
  • "Travelers using Expedia have booked travel to more than 2,100 cities in more than 220 countries, territories or colonies."
  • "Over the last ten years alone, travelers who booked through Expedia have flown 534 billion miles, or the equivalent of 72 round trip flights from the sun to Pluto."
  • "Expedia has sold enough hotel room nights in the last 20 years to account for every person living in the US."

    As part of its celebrations, customers can receive coupons throughout the summer, "including 20 percent off hotels, $20 off hotels, and $150 off packages," beginning Tuesday. Expedia is also offering a surprise coupon offer where the discount could be as much as 96 percent off. The online travel company will also offer hotel deals through August 2.

    At time of writing, Expedia was down 1.65 percent at $110.44.
