Snapchat Just Surpassed Twitter In One Key Area

Facebook Inc FB's social media dominance and number one positioning is, for the most part, well understood by investors. However, there is a key debate going on between which company is ranked as the second best social media empire – Twitter Inc TWTR or Snapchat.

CNBC, citing the latest data from the digital intelligence firm SimilarWeb, reported that Snapchat just overtook Twitter in a key category.

As of the end of April, the Snapchat app was installed on 22.7 percent of all U.S. Android devices. On the other hand, Twitter's app was installed on just 21.8 percent, marking the first time Snapchat outranked Twitter in this category.

Snapchat users spend an average of 20 minutes and 20 seconds on the app per day, while Twitter users spend just 12 minutes and 21 seconds.

"We are concerned that Twitter may be ceding potential and active users to sites such as Snapchat, which, with its photo- and video-based core model, may be better aligned with the use of smartphones in the 'selfie' era," CNBC quoted Argus analyst Jim Kelleher as saying in his report.

Naturally, the same data confirmed Facebook's dominance. The core-Facebook app was installed on 68.4 percent of all Android devices, followed by Messenger at 59.4 percent, Instagram at 41.8 percent and WhatsApp at 20.9 percent.
