Verizon Communications Inc.

revealed that it completed OpenStack cloud deployment in five of its data centers in the United States. That was the industry's biggest network function virtualization. According to the company, the NFV project commenced in 2015 and established a production design based on a core, as well as, pod architecture that provided the hyperscale capabilities and flexibility necessary to meet its complex network requirements. The telecom service provider said that deployments were in progress currently in the additional domestic data center, as well as, aggregation sites with global locations to be deployed in the upcoming months. Verizon revealed that it worked with Big Switch Networks like Dell and Red Hat to develop the OpenStack pod-based design, which went to deployment of over 50 racks in five production data centers from concept stage in less than nine months. The company's VP of Network Technology Planning, Adam Koeppe, said that "Building on our history of innovation, this NFV project is another step in building Verizon's next-generation network -- with implications for the industry. New and emerging applications are highlighting the need for collaborative research and development in technologies like NFV. We consider this achievement to be foundational for building the Verizon cloud that serves our customers' needs anywhere, anytime, any app." The telecom service provider said that to validate the resiliency of the NFV pod design at scale, its alliance partners constructed and tested big scale test beds mirroring the production design, leveraging the open source community to ultimately deliver high quality, validated NFV pod architecture. .
