'Zootopia' Hype Is Huge For Disney

The social chatter for Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)'s animated film Zootopia is strong and bodes well for the company.

Zootopia is an American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is the 55th Disney animated feature film. It is scheduled to be released in the Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats on March 4, 2016.

TickerTags data shows that Zootopia social mentions are larger than recent Disney animated movies like Big Hero 6 and Good Dinosaur. Two days prior to the release of Disney's animated film Zootopia, organic social chatter associated with the film (as measured by # tweets containing "Zootopia", not including re-tweets) are exceeding those of Big Hero 6 by 50 percent and The Good Dinosaur by 300 percent at the equivalent release stages of those films.

Film critic Mark Hobin tweeted: "Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6 all had positive early reviews but the enthusiastic buzz for ZOOTOPIA feels unprecedented."

A tweet from Jeff Mahadi reads: "Gotta admit, I did like Inside Out & The Good Dinosaur but Zootopia just mops the floor with those two. Disney is on a roll o_0 Sorry Pixar."

Big Hero 6 and Good Dinosaur opened domestically to $56 million and $39 million respectively. Zootopia's social momentum, combined with strong early critical reviews (100% Rotten Tomatoes rating) point to the possibility that the film could exceed Hollywood's $60 million domestic opening weekend box office projections, a net positive for Disney shareholders.
