Elon Musk: Self-Driving Vehicles Will Be Ready In Just Two Years

Self-driving and fully autonomous vehicles represent the future of transportation – and that future could be a reality within just two years, according to Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA)'s CEO Elon Musk.

Speaking to Fortune, Musk said his company has "all the pieces" in place to release a fully autonomous vehicle that can operate in any condition and on any road. He added that the company is now in the stage of "refining those pieces" and "putting them in place" to ensure they "work across a huge number of environments."

Tesla has already released the first generation of its autopilot that offers drivers computer-assisted parallel parking, steering and lane changes. Unfortunately, Musk declined to reveal further details about its next generation of autopilot.

"We're going to end up with complete autonomy, and I think we will have complete autonomy in approximately two years," Musk said.

Finally, Musk pointed out that regulators will lag behind the technology and in some jurisdictions, approval of autonomous cars may take five years or more.
