Factories in China boast dormitories where workers can spend the night in order to put in more hours and low wages, which make the cost of production much cheaper for firms. However, as new technology makes its way into factories, many expect the playing field to be leveled.
Robots
Using robots in a manufacturing setting is nothing new, but the robots used have generally been large, cumbersome and often dangerous. These issues constrained robots' usefulness and usually required manufacturers to hire one or more overseers to ensure the machines were operating safely and effectively.
However, a new type of robot has emerged with nimble limbs capable of completing more delicate jobs like assembling electronics or sewing clothes, and doing so safely.
Japan's Fanuc Corp. has designed robots capable of filling syringes with medication and putting their caps on much faster than their human counterparts could.
Safer Way To Use Robots
Not only can the robots perform a wider range of tasks, but they are also lighter and safer to use alongside humans.
New robot designs feature sensors and cameras that are able to detect when someone or something is nearby and slow down its operations to avoid an accidental injury. That type of technology could make the use of robots more widespread, eliminating the need for a large, low-wage workforce.
Improving Productivity
Other manufacturers are looking into ways to improve their existing workers' productivity by supplying them with new technology. Google Glass, Google Inc GOOG GOOGL's failed attempt at connected eyewear, has been integrated in firms like Boeing Co BA and United Parcel Service, Inc. UPS to give workers access to information they need on the floor quickly.
The glasses provide workers with a hands-free way to look at things like instructions or manuals, making their jobs safer and easier.
