Apple Insider on Tuesday reported that Apple Inc. AAPL is looking to convert a failed sapphire production facility in Mesa, Arizona into a "global command center." Apple Insider cited a news report by The Phoenix Business News that Apple plans n hiring 300 to 500 more employees to staff its upcoming data center in the East Valley area of Arizona. The site was a former manufacturing facility of GT Advanced Technologies Inc GTATQ and was contracted to supply Apple with sapphire material. GT Advanced was unable to meet Apple's expectations and filed for bankruptcy in October. Apple announced in February it would re-purpose the infrastructure and will commence building the "global command center" in 2016 as part of an original $2 billion, ten-year plan to transform the Mesa facility into a green data center. The facility will serve as a command center for the company's global networks and marks one of the largest investments in Apple's history. The center will be powered with renewable energy and build out solar projects in the process. John Giles, Mesa's mayor commented that Apple has increased its initial commitment and now plans on investing more than $2 billion in capital investment over five years, as part of a new 30-year commitment to Mesa. The new "command center" will take up half of the 1.3 million-square-foot property, but the company has yet to disclose what it plans on doing with the other vacant half. Shares of Apple were trading relatively flat shortly after Wednesday's opening bell at $130.15, up 0.05 percent.
