The excitement around Apple Inc. AAPL's latest gadget, the Apple Watch, has created a new market for smartwatches that many believe will quickly capture consumers' attention. Although the field is still in its early days, investors are already looking out for innovative watchmakers that will meet the growing demand.

Apple

Apple is likely to be the leader in smartwatches much like the company has dominated the mobile market. The company is expected to rake in around $7.3 billion in watch sales this year as customers can spend anywhere between $400 and $17,000 on the device.

Samsung

Samsung SSNLF has long been a contender to Apple in the mobile phone market, and that isn't expected to change when it comes to watches. This year the company has already released six wearable devices and launched its own operating system to run its Galaxy Gear watch.

Motorola

Motorola Solutions Inc MSI's Moto 360 boasts Android software and has had several updates to fix consumer complaints about usability and battery life. However, although the watch got plenty of attention upon its release in 2014, its price has fallen dramatically with the introduction of the Apple Watch.

Pebble

Pebble, a privately held company, has made a big splash in the smartwatch pool. The company launched via a $10 million Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and is planning to release its third generation watch in the coming year. While Pebble takes up just a sliver of the smartphone space, the company says its user feedback and focus on keeping it simple will help it excel against giants like Apple and Samsung.
